Rupi was interviewed about the issue on Sky News today where she outlined some of the issues faced by cohabiting couples.
Rupi said “Office for National Statistics figures show the number of unmarried couples have doubled in the past 16 years.
Many of these couples, be they same-sex or heterosexual, have no idea what their legal rights are and how to protect themselves.
For example, cohabiting couples who are not married do not have the same legal protection under the law when it comes to Wills and separation. Many do not realise they can protect themselves and their partners by using a cohabitation agreement. After all, it’s not just about what happens when you separate, but what happens if one of you dies.”
