Ling, who also once taught at the Royal Northern College of Music and was highly regarded in his field, was arrested last February and has now been charged with one count of rape and two counts of indecent assault. Greater Manchester Police have said that the former charge relates to a female pupil from Chetham’s in the 1990s.
A number of former Chetham’s teachers have been investigated in connection with similar allegations as part of Greater Manchester’s inquiry, Operation Kiso. Just last month, former Chetham’s conductor, Nicholas Smith, was convicted of indecently assaulting a pupil in the 1970s and is now facing a jail term. Violinist and former Chetham’s teacher, Michael Layfield, has also been charged with one count of rape against a young female in the 1980s. His trial is due to take place next year.
